Gelatin as a kind of biomass possesses excellent film-forming ability and oxygen barrier property. However, application of gelatin is limited due to its poor toughness and water resistant. In this work, cellulose nanowhiskers/gelatin composite film was fabricated with cellulose whiskers as dispersion phase. The structure and properties of composite film were characterized by TEM, SEM, UV-vis spectroscopy, swelling and mechanical tests. The results indicate that cellulose whiskers improve the mechanical property and stability in water. The swelling ratio of composite film is about 4 folds compared with pure gelatin film when the whiskers content is 15%. Mechanical property of composite film is improved with 9% whiskers addition.
