Before graft copolymerization of starch with methyl acrylate(MA),the esterification of the starch with acryloyl chloride was applied to enhance grafting efficiency.Meanwhile, effects of the acryloylation on mechanical properties of starch film and the adhesion of starch to polyester fibers were studied. The experimental results show that, compared with unpretreated starch, the grafting efficiency of the acryloylated starch grafted with MA(ALS-g-PMA) is increased 10%~27% when the degree of substitution(DS) of acryloylation of starch is in a range of 0.005~0.036.In addition, the mechanical properties of ALS-g-PMA film and the adhesion of ALS-g-PMA to polyester fibers are improved substantially. The appropriate DS value of acryloylated starch should range from 0.012 to 0.022 after taking the experimental results into overall consideration.
